Who?
Joseph Pilates was born in 1883. He was unwell as a child suffering with many aliments including asthma and rickets. As a young man in the early 1920’s, he became inspired to find ways to help himself improve his own health. Taking elements from martial arts, yoga and gymnastics, Pilates created an exercise system that had both physical and mental balance. Being interned during the 1st World War and working as a hospital orderly, Pilates was able to hone his exercises, helping wounded soldiers improve.
Later, in New York, with his wife Clara, Pilates taught his “Contrology” system to Dancers and clients alike. He created machines to enhance and challenge his exercise system. Most are still the same design today.
The Pilates method is now used throughout the world and widely respected.
What?
The Pilates mat work method is a series of exercises that uses your own body weight as resistance. The focus is building strength throughout body but in particular the core, but also increasing flexibility and improving posture. In Studio Pilates, using the Reformer, Trapeze Table etc the body is challenged and exercised in an alternative way but with great results.
Why?
To improve posture, to improve flexibility, muscle strength, a greater sense of wellbeing, connection to your body and your breathe and because it is great fun!
